The Stretch Clock

After spending decades stooped over operating tables, and years hunched over a keyboard, my back is pretty much wrecked. Over the past year, however, I’ve made considerable progress in reversing this trend. I’ve spent time with a personal trainer, I’ve improved my posture, and I invested in a sit-stand desk and ergonomic chair. While all of these things have been helpful, I’ve discovered another tool that I’ve come to view as indispensable. It’s called The Stretch Clock, and it’s free

The Stretch Clock is a gadget you download onto your desktop, you select how often you want it to come on, and it will automatically open your browser and play a video of a guy stretching a specific area of the upper body. Each video lasts about a minute, and there are fifteen different stretches that play in random order at the specified time interval. There is also an annual-fee version that features a greater variety of stretches, models (male and female), and locations, along with the ability to create a favorites list.

I use the Stretch Clock not only for stretching, but also as a reminder to change the height of my desk. Every thirty minutes I’ll stretch with the video, then I’ll raise my desk to standing height. Thirty minutes later I’ll stretch again, then lower the desk to sitting height. Even if you don’t have a sit-stand desk, you can use the Stretch Clock to remind you to get up and move around (in addition to stretching) every twenty to thirty minutes. So, if your workday leaves you with tightness or pain in your back, neck or arms, get the Stretch Clock and use it. If you don’t have tightness or pain, get it anyway so you can avoid these problems in the future. If you already use, or decide to try the Stretch Clock, please leave a comment and let me know what you think.
